SHELLEY Davies, the local fundraising manager for Cancer Research UK, visited Allenbourn Middle School to receive a very substantial cheque. Each year group chooses a charity that they support throughout the year, and last year's Year 7 children managed to raise an incredible £1,453.59 for Cancer Research UK. At a special assembly, Shelley showed the children a short video about the charity's work, and explained how survival rates have improved over the years because of work being done by groups like hers. One particularly telling statistic for her young audience is the survival rate for children with leukaemia. In the 1960s it was only one in ten, now it is eight in ten who survive. Rebecca Legg, now in Year 8, persuaded her year group that this was the charity they should support, and money was raised in many different ways, with the major event being a sponsored fancy dress fun run.
