BV Dairy is pleased, once again, to be supporting the BV Media Awards which aims to highlight the strengths and variety of businesses in the local area.
In 2014 BV Dairy have chosen to sponsor of the Environmental Business of the Year Category – an award they themselves were proud recipients of in 2012.
The Team at BV Dairy have a strong focus to continually improve their own environmental performance and reduce the impact of the production facility on the local environment and natural resources.
Rachel Caines – EMS Coordinator commented ‘BV Dairy has been certified to the internationally recognised Environmental Standard, ISO 14001, for in excess of 3 years and have worked hard in 2012/2013 to reduce water consumption (down by over 8% per unit tonne of product produced). Waste to landfill is at a minimum and staff across the entire site have been extremely supportive in making recycling part of the Company’s ethos.’
BV Dairy’s interest in environmental issues is well known in the area and manifested itself in its own award winning, pioneering anaerobic digestion and energy generation plant – the first commercial high rate plant in the UK dairy sector. This utilises all waste liquids produced in the plant cleaning and cheese production from the factory by converting them into biogas.
The biogas is then used to generate electricity which is returned to the factory for use in production. In 2013 the electricity produced was the equivalent of that used by 187 family homes, and this year BV Dairy will also be adding heat recovery to our environmental credentials.
The by-product of the anaerobic digestion system is a solid digestate that is used to enrich local grassland.
‘The topic of the environment is something that is very, very close to our hearts here at BV Dairy’ said Harry Cowan – Sales and Marketing Director. ‘The wealth of experience that is here within our Directors and Staff make us well placed to have a valued input into the judging of this important category and we are looking forward to seeing the entries arriving.’
