A CHARITY that helps Dorset parents and their babies needs a lifeline to carry on its vital work.
Clare Perriss, interim coordinator of the National Childbirth Trust branch that covers Blandford and Dorchester, said it faced closure unless more people came forward.
A meeting was being held in Dorchester last night to find a way to keep the branch going.
She said: "The branch is in urgent need of more volunteers and if they are not forthcoming then the branch will close down completely."
She said it was essential under NCT charter rules that four roles were filled - the branch coordinator, treasurer, membership coordinator and parent support coordinator.
All had become vacant and the branch had been operating under a special arrangement while a survival plan was worked out.
Other roles were also needed to ensure the branch worked well including a secretary, nearly new sales coordinator, a general inquiries contact and newsletter editor.
The branch covers an area from Portland to the north of Blandford.
Clare said: "The branch offers so much - antenatal classes, postnatal services, social events, counselling, breastfeeding advice, baby and toddler groups and a lot more.
"It's been operating for many years and must have helped thousands of people in this area - it's essential we do all we can to keep it going"
She is urging parents who have benefited from the NCT to give something back in return and also for anyone who would like to get involved to contact her to find out more.
She said: "You don't have to be a new mother. I'd love to hear from anyone who would like to help in any way, perhaps running a fundraising event.
"We used to hold Nearly New sales in each of the towns but we can't at the moment.
"This all comes at a time when what we offer is more important than ever. It would be really sad if the branch closed."
Clare, who moved from Australia to Child Okeford four years ago shortly before the birth of her daughter, said the NCT branch played a vital role in helping her establish new friends.
