Peter Gutteridge, 90, former chairman of East Dorset District Council and past Mayor of Ferndown, lost his wife Patricia to breast cancer recently. Rather than receiving flowers at Patricia’s funeral, Peter and his family requested donations be made to the Ladybird Unit at Poole Hospital raising £600.This donation brings the total raised by Peter and his family to £1,100.

Peter recently celebrated his 90th birthday with a party entitled ‘ninety years of happiness’ at Bournemouth’s Miramar Hotel in September. The birthday party also celebrated 67 years of marriage to Patricia. Instead of asking for gifts, Peter asked that the many friends and family who went along made a donation to the Ladybird unit at Poole Hospital to thank them for the excellent care received by his wife Patricia.

Peter said: “I am devastated that this terrible disease has taken my lovely wife.

I wanted to make a donation in loving memory of my dear wife Patricia who had such wonderful nursing but eventually lost the battle against this horrible disease.

“The family value this excellent donation and hope it will help to continue the financing of necessary works to combat the spread of this disease in the future.”

Pamela Bell, fundraising coordinator for Poole Hospital Charity said: “We are delighted that Peter and his family chose to support the Ladybird Unit at this time. I had the pleasure of meeting Pat when they presented the donation from Peter’s birthday party, she was a wonderful lady. The family have raised a stunning £1,100 which will be used to support future breast cancer patients.”
