A Dorset branch of The Green Party has spoken out against the Police Crime and Commissioner elections - believing the role will give too much power to one person.

The South East Dorset Greens did not put forward a candidate for today's election, and believe that neither or the four candidates standing in Dorset are independent.

Party Press Officer Ryan Cleminson said: "We believe there are dangers associated with a single politician being given so much power over the police and that all local public services should be accountable to the people through the local council and elected councillors.

"We remain unpersuaded that any of the current candidates are independent.

"The Green Party is particularly concerned about protecting community policing teams and the need for the police to engage with local residents and councillors about community safety issues.

"We are also asking candidates how they would work with other agencies to prevent crime and promote the rehabilitation of offenders."
