A man was taken to Salisbury Hospital with a serious head injury after his car hit a telegraph pole in Shaftesbury.

A blue Landrover Discovery overturned after colliding with the pole at Foyle Hill near St James' Church.

Emergency services were called to the scene at lunchtime today, but the injured driver was already out of his vehicle.

He was suffering from a serious head injury, and the air ambulance was requested to take him to hospital.

However, due to heavy fog it was not possible to use the air ambulance - and he was instead taken by ambulance to Salisbury District Hospital.

The road was closed by police between St James' Common and Foyle Hill while recovery work was carried out.

BT were also at the scene to deal with the fallen telegraph pole.

The driver is expected to spent the night in hospital, but he is conscious and breathing.
