AFC Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe is challenging his side to maintain their league position after topping League One following their win over Crewe Alexandra.

Two goals from Brett Pitman helped the Cherries to a 2-1 win over Alexandra - sending the Dorset side top of League One.

Howe admitted it wasn't his team's most polished display but paid tribute to Pitman's contribution.

"It wasn't our best performance. We didn't keep the ball well enough and had to soak up pressure" said Howe.

"It's put us at the top of the table and that is something that is nice to see. It's taken a long time to get there and the challenge now is to stay there."

Pitman has scored five times against Crewe over two games in the last month.

Following a hat-trick at The Goldsands Stadium in January, the 26-year-old's brace on Tuesday sent Bournemouth to the summit of League One.

"I can imagine Crewe are sick of the sight of Brett Pitman" added Howe.

"To pick up six points against them, even if it wasn't in our best fashion, is big at this stage in the season.

"It's all about results and like previously, it could go a long way to help us."
