Thanksgiving is one of the major annual holidays in the United States, and for Americans is right up there in popularity with Christmas.

Generally celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, it keeps the busy winter season going in the States; being just a month after Halloween and a month before Christmas and New Year. The holiday is celebrated by Americans to mark the ‘First Thanksgiving’, when the Pilgrims, who originated from these shores, gave thanks to God for helping them find their way to the New World.

The celebrations, at least in terms of the food, are very much like Christmas in the UK – turkey with all the trimmings is eaten, so if you love your Sunday roast you are bound to be in for a treat if you are enjoying your cheap holidays to the US.

A great place to be at Thanksgiving is Florida. If you are travelling with the family, Disney World Orlando is an absolute must.

At Thanksgiving it is naturally busy but you can still get some great holiday deals. It is worth it so you can see for yourself the extra attention put into the decorations around the park as well as visiting and taking part in the shows and parades designed specifically for the season.

You can take part in the tours and trips that put on massive Thanksgiving celebrations while visiting Amelia Island. This historic island has a town and fort, all of which will have as much Thanksgiving activity as you can shake a turkey at. Resorts and hotels in the area put on feasts and special events, so it is a good idea to look up or enquire about what is happening near where you are staying in advance.

Thanksgiving in America is a four-day holiday from school and as such you can expect to see lots of children involved in any events. In Florida itself there are a number of Thanksgiving parades that cannot be missed. As well as Disney World, the state has evening and even twilight shows for families to view during the holiday season.

If this has whetted your appetite, Direct Holidays have a wide range of Florida holiday deals for 2013 available. Experience the sun, sea, sand and excitement of Florida holidays next summer by booking your break now and getting ahead of the game.
