THE local Branch of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) is delighted that Weymouth & Portland Council have listened to the concerns of local businesses and have removed overnight car parking charges.
Car parking is one of the key issues in the FSB’s Keep Trade Local campaign, with affordable, available parking clearly a priority for the future of independent traders. There are issues that local authorities can address to help reverse the tide of closing shops and a decreasing night time economy, in order to help people return to the town centre. Removing the overnight parking charge is a very positive step by the Council, and hopefully one of many that will modernise car parking policies, and support the local businesses. Small businesses remain the heart of the local economy, and in generating wealth, employment and opportunity, are vital to our communities.
David Trickett, FSB Rural Dorset Branch Chair said: ‘As both a local resident and business owner, I am very aware of how frustrating car parking charges can be. Within the FSB, we have been unhappy with the overnight charge for some time, and are pleased that anyone coming into Weymouth can now park for free from 6pm until 9.30am. Parking throughout the area still needs to be reviewed to try to help support our local micro and small businesses, but we are delighted that both residents and visitors to Weymouth will be able to enjoy free overnight parking and help boost the night time economy.’
