A confident performance from Gillingham Town helped the Dorset side secure victory over Winterbourne United as the Gills go ninth in the Western Premier League.

Goals from Ashley Clarke and Nick Compton helped the Dorset side to a 2-1 win and the margin could have been greater had the Gills not wasted several good chances.

Gillingham made a promising start and Jack Vallis' headed effort rattled the crossbar after only four minutes of play.

Aaron Rodriguez had an effort cleared off the line before Clarke opened the scoring - following up a ball from Rodriguez which was parried by Winterbourne goalkeeper Jack Rogers.

Rodriguez and Clarke were linking up well and providing a real threat against the home side.

However, Winterbourne were able to soak up the Gillingham pressure and found a surprise equaliser against the run of play on the half hour mark.

Some patient passing set up a great opportunity, with the ball blasted past Jamie Beale to square up the contest.

Gillingham didn't let their heads drop and Vallis connected with another corner. His header was cleared off the line by a defender, but Compton was on hand to smash home the rebound from close range.

The visitors continued to pile on the pressure in the second half, but couldn't extend their lead. Dan Cox came closest to scoring Gillingham's third goal when he rounded Rogers, but his shot from a tight angle drifted agonisingly wide of the mark.

Winterbourne rarely threatened, allowing Gillingham to pick up all three points and move up to ninth place in the Western Premier League.
