A man sparked a full-scale rescue alert at 4.30am today by jumping into the sea off Swanage Pier.
The town's volunteer lifeboat crew were woken and mustered at the boathouse after a member of the public warned Portland Coastguard that a swimmer was in difficulties.
But he was seen emerging safely from the water before the inshore lifeboat was launched.
