They say you never forget your favourite teacher. That is certainly true for painter Laura Rich from Mere. She was delighted to be asked by her Headteacher from middle school, Tom Sleigh, to show some of her recent paintings, alongside 13 other local artists, in the newly refurbished gallery space at the Shaftesbury Arts Centre in Bell Street.

Tom and Laura first met over 20 years ago at Duchy Manor School (now Mere School) and have kept in touch. Tom, now retired, paints from his garden studio in Shaftesbury and Laura, a busy Mum of 3, also paints from her studio in Mere.

Laura said, “Tom was a great inspiration at school and encouraged my art early on. I am still very proud that he pinned one of my drawings to the wall in his office and it stayed there the whole time I was at Duchy! This exhibition feels a bit like that, I'm proud that he asked me to show alongside him.”

The exhibition continues until the 12th February. See www.shaftesburyartscentre.co.uk for more info.
