The background to this proposed affordable housing development in Merley relates to the lack of new affordable housing developments in Poole. Raglan Housing Association believes in providing high quality affordable homes in partnership with local authorities in order to meet housing need. Our homes are designed to be easy to use and cost-effective for our residents to live in, while being attractive and enhancing the communities where we operate. The Association was selected by the Borough of Poole to design a new housing scheme to meet the growing demand for affordable housing in the town. This site is among others that are being considered.
When it comes to building new homes, we recognise the importance of consultation. It is important that where we are proposing to build new homes in a community that local people are aware of the plans and are given adequate opportunity to comment and shape these plans. The consultation event at the Merley Community Centre was the first step in finding out what local residents think. It was extremely well attended and the feedback so far has been mixed, with a large number in support of providing new affordable homes on this site. Those against have raised some concerns about the design as well as access arrangements. We will work to address these where we can. All feedback received will be passed to the scheme architect and Poole Council. Should the project proceed, the plans will be amended where feasible. The consultation process is ongoing and staff continue to liaise with residents about the project. It is hoped that by doing so local people will feel that they have been listened to and will have also influenced the design of the new homes and the scheme in general.
Raglan Housing Association firmly believes that everyone deserves the opportunity to live in a decent home within sustainable, mixed communities, and that by working in partnership with the Borough of Poole the proposal to offer new homes for rent and shared ownership will go some way to meeting this aspiration.
