A NEW show jumping competition for very young riders has been introduced into the programme of winter jumping events at Half Moon Stud, Motcombe.

It is the first time in the 25 years that the Winter Show Jumping Competitions have been held that there has never been a show dedicated to the very young rider.

Lynn Bultitude, course builder, equestrian judge and now the organising entrepreneur behind the winter shows, has long recognised the importance of getting the young rider involved in the general format and etiquette of show jumping at an early age, in order to encourage their long term involvement in the sport. So the first mini jumping day arrived. Would it be a success? Is there sufficient interest in the area? These and many other nervous questions were answered when the horse lorries and trailers started to arrive at 9am for the clear round starter for the day. The sun shone, the sky was blue and it was very cold, but the riders would soon warm up.

The classes started with a competition for beginners, guided around the course on a lead rein by a doting but fit parent, and continued to the final class where the fences were a formidable 70cm high.

There were a few tears through the day, but mostly huge smiles as the young riders completed their events. There were some special fun awards were made, including for the best jump from a standstill given to Ellie Hawkins when her pony Nik Nak stopped for a poo in front of a fence, and then took off. Another went to Isabelle Fox who had taken the trouble to 'Christmas' up her pony Sammy with tinsel plaited into his mane. Ellie won another for not breaking a fence pole when Nik Nak dumped her on top of it.

The day was sponsored by East Farm Christmas of Codford St.Mary, with thanks from the organisers.

Show jumping continues at Half Moon on 20th January and 24th February.
