Max Waller’s 91 not out helped Dorset CCC get off to a dream start in their Unicorns Knock-Out Trophy campaign with victory over Wales.
Dorset took a 32 runs victory in the Group 1 clash at Dean Park – dismissing the visitors for 144.
Waller came in as opener and despite Dorset losing cheap wickets through Michael Porter (5), Aaron Williams (2), Jake Lintott (2), Tom Hicks (2), Ed Denham (0) and James Hayman (0) – the Somerset player steered the hosts to 176, all out after 48 overs.
Dorset lost Porter after racking up only 12 runs, but Waller built a partnership of 65 with Josh Lawrence (21) before another strong pairing with newly appointed captain Chris Park (20).
Wales made a strong start to their innings with Aneurin Norman looking strong before he lofted a catch to Denham on 14. Waller also dominated with the ball in hand, taking two LBW decisions to put the visitors on 60-3.
The away side worked away at the target with Sam Pearce (20) and Tom Baker (37) building some momentum, but Dorset bowled out their opponents for 144 in 44.5 overs to take victory.
Dorset take two points into their game against Devon at Sidmouth next weekend. The West country side beat rivals Cornwall by seven wickets yesterday.
