Verwood residents will be able to get into shape when a state-of-the-art gym opens next year.
The extension to The Hub should be completed by May 2013, with work set to start next week.
East Dorset District Council agreed to sell Verwood Leisure Centre to Morrisons - but locals will soon be able to benefit from the new 50-station gym.
Jacqui Sainsbury, General Manager of Verwood Art and Leisure Association said: "Over the past eighteen months or so two organisations have come together to lay the foundations in place to deliver sport, leisure, arts and entertainment under one organisation with a new identity brand -'Lifestyle'.
"Now, as foundations are ready to be laid for the building work, it promises to be an exciting era for Verwood with the new facilities offering such a variety of activities for all ages. It's really great news for everyone."
This week, Drew Construction will be setting up their site compound in the garden behind The Hub - with the extension's steel frame expected to be erected before Christmas.
Cllr Spencer Flower, Leader of East Dorset District Council said: "These developments will improve the sport and fitness facilities in the district and help us meet our objectives to improve opportunities for young people in the area to live healthy and successful lives."
