There is a definite buzz in the air around Shaftesbury. The town appears to be ahead of the curve when it comes to economic recovery. The Chamber of Commerce cannot take all the credit but they certainly played their part last year. Christmas activities were a great success with the late night shopping “Christmas Extravaganza” being talked about as far away as the New York Post and many High Street shops reporting a healthy increase in trade. The lights and trees this year were also a great improvement. It was great to see the whole town pulling together as one. The Chamber would like to thank all the businesses who took part. Special thanks have to go to Ruth Hughes from The Beadster for tracking down the Hovis boy and to Ray Humphreys and his team for so efficiently putting up all the lights – and taking them down again!
Pam Cruickshank of Shaftesbury Snowdrops gave a presentation at the Chamber’s January meeting. The Chamber fully supports the event and is looking forward to it starting in February and launching a successful series of activities throughout 2014.
Mentions in the House
Towards the end of last year the Chamber transferred some of its funds into the 1st Dorset Credit Union. This move is now being followed by other local organisations. The innovative decision has been acknowledged by the Arch Bishop of Canterbury and local MP Bob Walters was so impressed that he has written to say that he intends to bring the matter up with Vince Cable; Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, to see how they can encourage others to follow Shaftesbury’s lead.
Meetings and get-togethers
Membership of the Chamber has grown rapidly in the past year. Members are reminded that they are all welcome to attend the executive committee’s meetings which are held on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 7pm at the Royal Chase Hotel.
Members will be gathering for an informal social evening/after work drinks at the Grosvenor Arms in Shaftesbury on Friday 31st Jan at 6pm. Everyone is welcome including non-members who may want to pop along for a chat.
