A proposed new Tesco store for Sherborne has seen an online petition set up against the plans.
Hundreds of angry Sherborne locals and businesses have already signed up to the petition after it was revealed the supermarket giant is planning to open a store in the Dorset town.
A Twitter account named 'No! Sherborne Tesco' has also been set up with nearly 200 followers already joining the campaign. Mary Portas has voiced her support, after the consumer champion visited Sherborne over the weekend.
The group is against a Tesco store being opened in Sherborne due to the impact on local businesses and concerns over traffic and congestion.
A statement from the group says: "We cannot underestimate the impact Tesco would have on our independent shops, markets and other high street stores. In other words, to the very fabric of the town centre and our way of life.
"In addition, retailers and garden centres on the outskirts of town, along with home and business service providers, would all be affected due to the scope of Tesco's trading model.
"Other than a thriving high street, Sherborne already has two major supermarkets and numerous smaller ones which can more than cope with our population of around 10,000.
"Those who want to shop in larger chain stores and supermarkets, and we respect that, need only pop into Yeovil for much more choice whenever they want."
Plans remain in the early stages, but Tesco has agreed a deal to take over the premises of the Sherborne Hotel.
Speaking to The Blackmore Vale Magazine, a Tesco spokesperson said: "We believe a food store will offer improved choice for local shoppers, many of whom are currently travelling elsewhere to do their weekly shopping.
"Our proposals are still in their very early stages and we look forward to holding a wide reaching public consultation exercise next year allowing all residents, community groups and representatives to comment on our proposals ahead of a potential planning application next spring."
