GILLINGHAM School recently featured in Tatler Magazine's list of 20 UK state secondary schools it considers to be the “creme de la crème.”
Feeder school Mere primary works closely with Gillingham to prepare pupils for their move into secondary education.
On a visit to Mere School last Summer Gillingham's Maths teacher praised the pupil's performance, and her confidence in their abilities proved well founded.
The latest SATs results for Mere School show that almost one third (31%) of 10 and 11 year old pupils achieved Level 5 in Maths and English combined - the standard expected of a 14 year old. The national average is just 21% at this level.
Maths results taken alone were even more impressive, with more than half (52%) of pupils achieving Level 5, compared with 41% nationally. Every single child achieved Level 4 or higher, compared to the national average of 85%.
A key conclusion from this year’s SATs results is that pupils make outstanding progress and achieve well at Mere School, regardless of their starting point. Mere is now ranked joint 18th out of 199 in Wiltshire for 'Value Added', a score which shows how much progress pupils make throughout their time at school. Every pupil progressed more than the national average.
This excellent progress has had a direct impact on the SATs results for all Year 6 children, but has notably encouraged a higher level of achievement from those previously at the middle ability level.
Maths Leader Paula Loxton said, "We carefully target teaching to the needs of the individual child, and this clearly shows in the results. We successfully challenge our most able pupils, and support others where necessary to close gaps in Maths knowledge."
