MAYOR of Shaftesbury Simon Pritchard is calling on townsfolk to do something silly for Comic Relief. He is organising eight hours of fundraising entertainment at the Town Hall on 15th March.
And he wants people to take half-hour slots in his "Shaftesbury Town Council is Having a Laugh" event and amuse the public with stories, poems and comedy - all silly.
The show will go on on the Town Hall balcony where performers will be given a microphone while collectors at ground level will be urging people to donate generously for Comic Relief.
Councillor Pritchard said: "I want this to be very silly and to raise as much money as possible.
"I dare say I will take a half-hour slot at some point during the day and I'll be wearing a red nose along with my mayoral chain.
"The day runs from 10am to 6pm and I hope employers will release their staff so that they can come along and listen and donate."
Councillor Pritchard added: "There is a lot of talent in Shaftesbury and this should be tapping in to it to help a good cause. People can take part individually or in pairs or a small group. They can tell stories or poems or even do a stand-up comedy routine. Whatever they do it will be non-stop eight hours of nonsense!"
Collectors will be asked to dress up in eye-catching silly outfits all adorned with the famous Red Noses.
Anyone willing to help with planning, collecting or performing or to sponsor the day should contact the mayor by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 01747 852420.
