A Dorset district councillor from near Sherborne has died suddenly aged 57.

Richard Jungius was a West Dorset District Councillor for the Cam Vale Ward. He passed away on Monday night.

A spokeswoman for Dorset Police Service confirmed they were called to Mr Jungius’ Caundle Marsh home.

She said his death was not being treated as suspicious and has been referred to the West Dorset Coroner’s office.

Robert Gould, leader of West Dorset District Council, said he had lost a good friend.

He said: “On behalf of West Dorset District Council I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Richard Jungius.

“Since being elected, Richard has played a vital role at the district council and sat on the executive committee where he served with great distinction.

“We will miss his intelligent and lively contribution to council business, and his passing is a terrible blow for west Dorset.

“I feel personally that I have lost a very good friend.”

Mr Jungius was elected to the district council in May 2011. In this role, he was a member of the executive committee and the council’s member champion for environmental protection.

Mayor of Sherborne Peter Rhodes also extended his sympathies to Mr Jungius family.

He said: “I met him on a couple of occasions and both times I found him open and knowledgeable in what we were talking about, but it was just council business.“I’m shocked.

I looked at him and he was active and much younger than me.“It’s not the sort of news at my age one wants to hear.

“On behalf of the town council, we are shocked and our thoughts are with his widow and also with his father.”
