An outdoor gym, provided by the Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group in partnership with Shaftesbury Town Council and the Dorset Community Foundation, is now open.
The new outdoor gym, which is free to use and open seven days a week, at Wincombe Recreation Ground, opposite the primary school, comprises 10 pieces of durable, all-weather, keep-fit equipment.
Mick Hicks, of STC, said: “This adult keep-fit equipment is an excellent addition to the impressive facilities for younger people already in place at the Wincombe Recreation Ground.”
There are instructions on every piece of equipment informing people how to use them correctly and how to gain the most benefit from them.
Dr Simone Yule, of the CCG, said: “As a GP I am delighted that outdoor exercise equipment has been installed in Shaftesbury for use by all. Exercise is vital to maintain health and well-being and is key in the management of many long term conditions including Diabetes, anxiety and depression.
“As a locality we have made exercise a priority and are joint funding the provision of this equipment throughout North Dorset, we are also purchasing pedometers to be made available to encourage activity.”
There is a variety of robust equipment available at the outdoor gym including a cross-trainer, combination shoulder/chest press and rowing simulator, as well as other equipment that exercise flexibility and manoeuvrability.
Thanks go to John Parker of the Shaftesbury & District Task Force and the Shaftesbury Open Spaces Group for advice on the siting of the gym equipment.
