Wells Rugby Club travel to Sherborne tonight with the opportunity to clinch the Southern Counties South title.
The Somerset side have won all 17 league games so far this season, including a 15-0 victory over Sherborne back in November.
Sherborne’s Head of Senior Rugby Jim Gower is aware it will take something special to shock the league leaders, but is quietly confident his side can cause an upset.
“We know they will be eager to defend their 100 per cent record” he said. “We’re quite excited about the game and quietly confident that we can win.
“Obviously they are a really strong team and it will take a huge effort from us, but I think the big crowd can play into our hands. We showed in the home game against North Dorset that we thrive during the big occasion.
“We know how good their running game is, but we just have to concentrate on ourselves and not let them control the ball. We’ve got some really talented players and there’s no reason we can’t give them a good game.”
Friday’s clash will be the Sherborne 1st 15’s second floodlit game at Gainsborough Park this season. Last month, Dorchester visited their Dorset rivals – but were less than enthusiastic about playing under floodlights.
“We’ve had a really positive vibe from Wells about playing the game on a Friday night” added Gower.
“It looks like we’ve finally found a team who is on the same page with what we’re trying to do, so I expect a brilliant atmosphere.
“It feels like a one-off game for us. It’s difficult when we don’t have much left to play for in terms of the league, but we’re hoping to end a really enjoyable season on a high.”
