STUDENTS in Sherborne say they feel “safe and well looked after” in school according to a new report.
Sherborne School has received results of its 2012 Boarding Welfare Intermediate Inspection made by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI).
The assessment, which focuses on compliance with the National Minimum Standards (NMS) for Boarding Schools, was previously conducted by Ofsted.
More than 550 of the 600 pupils board at the school.
Inspectors Colette Culligan, Louise Belrhiti and Reverend Graeme Rainey spent two-and-a-half days at the school for the review.
The team conducted formal interviews with boarders, held discussions with senior members of staff and governors, observed extra curricular activities and attended registration sessions.
Boarding houses and the school’s health centre were also visited, and responses of parent and pupil questionnaires were analysed.
According to a spokesman for the ISI, inspectors felt the school had fully met all recommendations from the previous report in 2009.
He said: “Younger pupils respect and trust their prefects, often turning to them first when needing help.
“Boarding staff are sensitive to the needs of all individuals and promote inclusiveness.
“Pupils say confidently that they feel safe and well looked after in school and they trust, respect and like their house staff and there is a wide range of staff who boarders can turn for support.”
The spokesman said questionnaire responses from parents show a very high level of satisfaction with the school.
But the report found that to completely meet the national standards, the school needs to implement procedures to assess non-teaching staff who work in boarding houses.
A spokeswoman for the school said this had already been identified as a target and a structure is being put in place as part of a development plan.
Areas for improvement in the report included recommendations to ensure staff inform the health centre of any medications given in the boarding houses, and to monitor the boarders’ attendance at meals.

“As ever, there are always ways in which we can improve, all in the knowledge that the pastoral care and education of our boys lie at the heart of Sherborne’s ethos and aims.”
