Pupils of Whitesheet Primary Academy were honoured to be asked to open a concert with the Salisbury Cathedral’s Boy Choristers and Lay Vicars on Monday evening.

The Concert of Cathedral Music was held in St Martin’s Church, Zeals, and was organised by the community of Zeals and Upper Stour to celebrate the start of the restoration programme of their William Sweetland 1866 pipe organ in the church.

More than £50,000 has already been raised by the Friends.

The concert was directed by David Halls with John Challenger, organist.

Local fundraising and big grants have given the appeal a big boost.

Andrew Fearn, organ restorer, is planning to start dismantling the organ shortly. It will then be rebuilt at his factory at Ottery St Mary and an opportunity will be made for all those interested to spend some hours in the factory, in May. The organ should be returned in late June.
