Tim Cardinal, a 35 year-old Wiltshire man, whose son Finn underwent heart surgery at only nine days old is taking a stand against heart disease by taking part in the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) Longleat Half Marathon, supported by Santander on Sunday 16th March.
After Finn was born, doctors picked up a heart murmur in a check-up before the family left the hospital. Initially, the thought was that it was a small hole that would close up naturally, but on referral the paediatric cardiologist diagnosed Finn with severe aortic stenosis and he was immediately booked for surgery.
Luckily, the operation was a success and the blood flow through the valve significantly improved to the point where Finn was allowed out of hospital after only 24 hours.
Tim said: “We’ve since been back to hospital for a number of check-ups over the past couple of years and I am so happy to say that so far Finn is fit and healthy and a fully active 2 year old. I recently read about the British Heart Foundation’s Longleat Half Marathon and I knew that I had to give it a go!”
“The British Heart Foundation is a fantastic charity, and I am convinced that it is thanks to the research they fund that we have seen such improvements in treatment for heart patients. Since the operation, it’s been a mixture of worry, relief and also feeling lucky. We naturally worry about Finn every day and especially when he has a check-up, as it is likely he will need another procedure or even a replacement valve. However, we have received excellent care at the Bristol Children’s Hospital, along with great support from family and friends”.
Tim knows that the Longleat Half Marathon will be a challenge, but knows the sense of achievement will be huge and any amount of money that he can raise for the BHF will be worth the aches and pains.
Tim adds: “Anything I can do to help raise money for the BHF and potentially help Finn and others in the future is really worth the time and effort.”
