THE idea behind developing The Town Meadow at Gillingham is to have a community space to enjoy and somewhere to hold events.
The use of the meadow is open to all and the fee charged will be set on a sliding scale, making it accessible to everybody. The money will go towards the care of the meadow.
Work is well underway to hard surface a track from the road to the Red Lion Pub car park. This will provide a solid space to hold the fair and other community events. Over time, and maybe with the help of some different coloured gravel added to the area, the appearance of the surfacing will soften.
Roses, bulbs and trees (Maple and Rowan) are being planted. If you're keen to get involved, help with planting this winter would be greatly appreciated.
As well as the surfacing being laid, a team of volunteers have repainted the railings by the river. The Ivy banding has been done which will potentially add another 20 years of life to some of the trees. Likewise the tree surgery and thinning has exposed views of the river and will benefit the lifetime of the trees, in particular the willow.
Many thanks to The Round Table, Vale Tree Surgery, Zendo and everybody else who has given their time to help look after the space.
There was a quiz night on 6th September at The Olive Bowl, which raised more than £500 for the meadow.
Membership of TMG (Town Meadow Gillingham) at £5 per annum is being established. As a member and friend, you will receive newsletters, be kept in the loop about events and will be able to vote on matters arising at the AGM. However, volunteers will still be needed and you do not need to become a member to be involved.
Email Bob to volunteer for a slot at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 01747 821269.
