BECOMING fit in Verwood is set to become easier. As part of a wider scheme to improve leisure and fitness provision in Verwood, work is about to start on a new state-of-the-art 50-station gym extension at The Hub.
East Dorset District Council, having agreed the sale of Verwood Leisure Centre to Morrisons, has now awarded the contract for construction of the extension to Drew Construction, based in New Milton.
They will be setting up their site compound in the garden behind The Hub this week and construction will start the following week. The structural steel frame will be erected before Christmas and the project will be complete in the middle of May 2013.
This project is part of a larger programme of work in Verwood that includes a new 3G all-weather sports pitch at Potterne Park and a new sports hall for the Emanuel Middle School.
Councillor Spencer Flower, Leader of East Dorset District Council, said: "These developments will improve the sport and fitness facilities in the district and help us to meet our objectives to improve opportunities for young people in the area to live healthy and successful lives."
Jacqui Sainsbury, general manager of Verwood Art & Leisure Association, added: "Over the past 18 months or so two organisations have come together to lay the foundations in place to deliver sport, leisure, arts and entertainment under one organisation with a new identity brand 'Lifestyle'.
"Now, as foundations are ready to be laid for the building work, it promises to be an exciting era for Verwood with the new facilities offering such a variety of activities for all ages. It's really great news for everyone."
