Show jumping at Half Moon Stud

THE winter show jumping at Half Moon Stud, Motcombe, started its 25th anniversary year last weekend with the new organiser, Lynn Bultitude in the driving seat.

Lynn and her staff had spent the night with all fingers crossed, as a furious storm raged across the area. If it continued through the day it was guaranteed to write off the event.

A lot was riding on a successful start to the new season. A poor turn out, would undoubtedly cause a financial loss, making it difficult to continue through the season.

The weather was key to a successful day, and at 4am it didn't look hopeful. It was chucking it down, blowing a gale, and the entire South West was under water. Come 7am and it all changed, the wind dropped, the rain ceased, blue sky appeared and the sun peaked through.

At 9am the first of the competitors started to arrive, and continued to do so throughout the day. All four classes were well supported and provided a brilliant opening day for Lynn, her band of helpers, and the sponsors without whom the event could not have got off the ground.

Next Sunday, 2nd December, is a day for very young children, which will be a break from the tradition of the past 25 years. There isn't much available locally for the very young rider to get a first taste of equestrian competition, and Lynn has decided to do something about it.

There will be 6 classes ranging from beginners on leading rein, and 8inch jumps, up to 2'3" fences, which is where events for the older rider and adults usually begin. So if your youngster has just started riding a Shetland or other small pony, bring him or her along to have a go.

The bigger classes will resume on 20th Januay and 24th February.
